Lewiston Democrats made a sweeping victory Monday, electing a Mayor and carrying four of the seven wards. This was all they had hoped to do, and yet they professed confidence that their hopes would be realized. The Republicans, realizing as they did that they were “up against it” good and hard, put up a desperate fight and not until the votes were counted did they surrender.

City Manager Bernal B. Allen disclosed last night he has requested officials of the Maine National Guard unit in Auburn to look over possible sites on which a new armory could be constructed. His announcement followed an earlier statement by State Adjutant General George M. Carter that the State Reserve Facilities Board has approved construction of a new armory in Auburn that would provide adequate housing for its National Guard unit.

Another four and three-quarter inches of sticky snow was dumped on the Lewiston-Auburn area yesterday by a northeast storm while a stubborn mercury stayed below freezing.

25 Years ago, 1980

The Rural Community Action Ministry noted its 10th anniversary Monday night during the annual meeting held at BQMC and moderated by Chairman Claudia Harvey.

A volunteer police department will be proposed to the voters at the town meeting Saturday. The initial proposal lists as objectives a force of trained and experienced officers to provide law enforcement services with four priorities: answer calls for criminal law enforcement and other police services; follow-up investigations on criminal matters; physical security checks to include vacant homes, businesses and camps; traffic law enforcement and accident investigation.
