EUSTIS – More than 70 residents attended the annual town meeting on Saturday, taking just two hours to dispatch 31 warrant articles.

“There was a lot more than usual,” Tax Assessor Sandra Scribner said Monday of the crowd.

She said taxpayers spent half of the meeting debating a single article: whether to spend $20,000 for after-school programs.

After an amendment was made to the article, which would have reduced the amount appropriated to $12,000, residents voted the article down through a secret ballot. The article failed by a vote of 21 to 28.

“It’s really a great program, but it shouldn’t be under the town’s umbrella,” said Scribner.

The town was asked to chip in on the after-school program because federal money has dried up for the program.

Lack of clarification and written information regarding the program were just some of the reasons it was rejected, according to Scribner.

Earl Wyman Jr. kept his position as selectman, while Scott Spatcher retained his spot on the Planning Board. Both candidates were unopposed.

The moderator for the meeting was Kirk Vajentic.
