WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Rachael Vanderwal drained 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to pace Boston University to a stunning 63-51 triumph over Maine in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament.

This was the first time the No. 8 seed defeated the No. 1 seed in conference history.

Adrienne Norris chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Terriers (14-15), while Cheri Raffo and Katie Meinhardt added 10 points each.

Monica Peterson led the Black Bears (20-9) with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Bracey Barker and Ashley Underwood tallied 11 points apiece. America East Defensive Player of the Year Kim Corbitt played just 14 minutes after aggrevating a shoulder injury late in the first half.

College of New Jersey sweeps St. Joe’s

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Ben Muniz had a pair of hits to pace The College of New Jersey to a 6-5 victory over St. Joseph’s in Game One of a collegiate baseball doubleheader.

Monks starting pitcher Greg Kimball allowed six earned runs in five innings. Derek McIntosh led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Ben Munix added a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, St. Joe’s jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but threw it away and lost 11-10.

The College of New Jersey came roaring back with three runs in the top half of the second, then Blake Bullis belted out a three-run homer in the fourth to tie the game at 7-7.

Freshman lefthander Charlie Furbush completed four innings in his second start as a Monk, allowing seven runs, eight hits, while recording six strikeouts. Furbush left the game with a 8-7 lead.

St. Joseph’s sweeps pair

FORT MYERS, FLA. – Helene Liaci drilled a two-run homer to left field in the first inning to lift St. Joseph’s to a 2-1 win over Wesleyan in the opener of a collegiate softball doubleheader.

Lead-off hitter Amanda Roy singled and Sabattus’ Allyson Ferguson moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. Liaci’s big shot sealed the victory. Kahler Dowling fanned nine to earn her second win of the season.

Molly Gaebe hit a double in the seventh inning and scored Wesleyan’s (0-2) only run on a passed ball.

Later Thursday, Ferguson recorded her first shutout of the season as St. Joe’s defeated Curry 2-0.

After six scoreless innings, the Monks (5-1) went to work in the top of the seventh. Darcy Lee singled, but was eventually thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice. Roy followed with an RBI single to plate Jamie Daugherty with the game’s first run.

Husson sweeps UPitt-Greensburg

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Nicole Manzo and Wendy Butler combined for four hits and two RBIs Thursday to lead Husson to a 9-2 victory over the University of Pittsburg at Greensburg.

Former Edward Little standout Deanna Maxim chipped in for Husson (1-0) with a hit and scored one run. Taralee Webster handled pitching duties, allowing five hits in seven innings to notch the win.

In Game Two, Alicia LaGrange fired a six-hit shutout to lift the Braves to a 1-0 victory. Maxim scored on an error after hitting a single in the eighth inning.

Maine drops pair

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Maine Black Bears dropped 5-2 decision to Robert Morris and a 1-0 shutout to Loyola.

Christina Belmonte had a double for Maine.

Skiing
Bates skier 30th

STOWE, Vt. – Dan Johnson of Bates College placed 30th Thursday in the men’s classical 10-kilometer Nordic race at the NCAA Championships at Stowe Mountain Resort.

Johnson’s time of 33:47.9 was nearly three minutes behind the race winner.

His Bates teammate Seth Hubbard placed 32nd with a clocking of 34:14.8.

A field of 38 skiers completed the 10K race.
