BATH – The Youth Theater of the Chocolate Church Arts Center in Bath is presenting Meredith Willson’s classic musical, “The Music Man” through March 19.

The youth theater program involves local schoolchildren from ages 8 to 19, with the exception of an adult Barbershop Quartet named Spare Parts.

Nancy Durgin of Wiscasset directs the show.

‘Music Man’ is the story of charismatic con man Harold Hill.

The story takes place around the turn of the last century when traveling salesmen were a main source of entertainment for towns.

Harold intends to trick an Iowa town, like he has many others, to organize a boys band. His plans fall to the wayside when he finds himself falling for Marian, the town’s starchy librarian and piano teacher.

The story combines humor and musical numbers, with a touching love story.

During its run on Broadway the show received eight Tony Awards.

The score for the film version won an Academy Award.

The performance schedule is 7 p.m. March 11 and 12; 2 p.m. March 13; 7 p.m. March 18; and 2 p.m. March 19.

Tickets are $9 for members of the arts center, $10 children/seniors, $12 in advance, and $15 at the door. Visa or MasterCard are accepted by phone at 442-8455.
