Farmers living on the “edge” of Lewiston, are as interested as any one in the proposed new canning factory in Sabattus. Lisbon people are interested too. Said a prominent business man, there, ” If a factory is established in Sabattus it will take away half of the business of this one; of course it would hurt this one and we had rather not see it go up.”

There is no prospect of the ice going out of Lake Auburn for some time to come as it is as thick now as it has been any time this winter and shows no signs of breaking up.

50 Years Ago, 1955

Arrival of the Polack Bros. Shrine Circus in Lewiston late tonight will be the forerunner of a three-day engagement at the Lewiston Armory. Under the auspices of Kora Temple, Polack Bros. will present many new circus acts recently imported from Europe. Heading the list of celebrities will be French aerialist Les Rhodins, Christansen’s Story Book act, Costine’s chimpanzees, Gene Randow the clown, Franklin and Astrid, hand balancing duo, and the six Friedlanis’ bicycle and unicycle act. Underprivileged children will be the guests of local businessmen at the circus.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Lewiston’s Central Maine Youth Center was crowded with people of all ages Tuesday afternoon, and the reason for all the commotion was the presence of one Robert Gordon (Bobby) Orr. The former Boston Bruins and Chicago Black Hawks defenseman was in town as part of a program in which Orr takes t the ice with youth hockey players and gives pointers on various aspects of the game. The superstar’s visit was supposed to be a secret, but word got around quickly, by the time the first hour-long session had ended, a good percentage of the local populace had stopped in to see the man who helped turn the Boston Bruins from also-rans into Stanley Cup champions.
