Two teacher workshop days in SAD 21 and one in SAD 43 will be moved to the end of the school year to allow students to make up classes lost by snowstorms.
The SAD 21 workshops originally set for March 24 and 25 were moved to June 20 and 21 by the school board Monday.
With this change, Dirigo High School seniors will graduate on time on June 10, said Superintendent Tom Ward. If more snow days are needed, he said, he would ask for a waiver from the state’s Department of Education.
SAD 21 has had six snow days so far this winter, about two more than normal.
“We’d rather have students go to school in March than in June,” he said.
High school seniors must attend 170 school days, while undergraduates must attend 175 days. As more school days have been canceled because of weather conditions, more days have been added to the end of the year. Right now, students in kindergarten through grade 11 will get out June 17.
SAD 43 directors voted 10-0 Tuesday night to move a teacher workshop day set for March 25 to the end of the year so seniors will graduate June 11.
Regular classes would be held March 25. With no further snow days, students will end classes for the year on June 21, unless directors further tweak remaining days.
SAD 43 students have six snow days to make up
SAD 44 students have had seven snow days and have set the last day for students as June 21. However, Superintendent David Murphy said he isn’t ready to change the June 10 graduation date just yet.
With March and April often snowy and with the potential for floods, he said the board will decide later what to do, if necessary, to fulfill the required number of student days.
He said there are no plans to use any part of April vacation or to change the teacher workshop day on March 25 to a student day.
