CANTON – George L. Baston, 88, a resident of Church Street in Jay, died Thursday, March 17, at Victorian Villa Nursing Home surrounded by his family.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1916, in Richmond, the son of Allen and Hazel McMaster Baston. He attended schools in Richmond, Livermore and Livermore Falls.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic earning the rank of Sgt.

On Aug. 30, 1941, he married the former Rita Leclerc at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. They made their home and raised their family on Church Street in Jay. Mrs. Baston passed away on Feb. 21, 1996.

In March of 1934 he began his employment with International Paper Company at the Otis Mill in Jay. He later transferred to the Androscoggin Mill working in the steam plant and retired on Sept. 1, 1978 with over 44 years of service. George was also a former constable for the Town of Jay.

He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. He was a member of the I.P. Quarter Century Club and a lifemember of the Lane-Dube Amvets, Post 33 of Jay; a former member of the Jay-Livermore Falls Hunting Club and a former member of the local men’s bowling league.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking.

He is survived by three daughters, Elaine Savoie of Shreveport, La., Jeannine Richard and her husband, James, of Jay, and Nancy Beckey of Livermore Falls; three sisters, Erlene Wood of Strong, Marjorie Oberton of Livermore, and Lorraine Mitchell and her husband, Clarence, of Strong; one brother, Sherwood Baston of Rye, N.H.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Donald, Vernon “Bill,” Edgar and Bernard “Happy” Baston.
