FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – After two spring training starts with the Boston Red Sox, David Wells is already thinking about complete games.
Wells allowed three runs in the first inning but recovered to throw three scoreless innings after that, and Boston came from behind for a 5-3 win Friday over a Florida Marlins split squad.
“I could have gone a couple more innings today, no problem. I wasn’t winded,” said Wells, who pitched for San Diego last year. “A couple more outings will be fine and then I feel that I’ll have the stamina to go nine.”
If Curt Schilling isn’t ready after undergoing ankle surgery last November, Wells said he’d “absolutely” want to pitch on opening night April 3 at Yankee Stadium, although he hasn’t been told that he will.
“It’s what I’m here for, man, those type of games. I love it,” he said. “If you don’t want to be in that game, you don’t want to play baseball, period.”
Schilling is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game on Monday, his first outing of spring training, after pitching impressively in a simulated three-inning game against four teammates in which he threw 63 pitches on Wednesday.
After Florida went ahead 3-0 in the first, Jay Payton hit a two-run homer for Boston in the second off Les Walrond and the Red Sox scored three in the seventh off loser Bryan Corey on Hanley Ramirez’s run-scoring double and sacrifice flies by Dave Berg and Tim Hummel.
Jason Kershner got his third save with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth.
The game started off poorly for Boston. Wells had trouble throwing his curve during warmups and began the first “with a bad attitude, not really thinking it was going to be a good day.”
Boston sends six to minors
The Boston Red Sox sent shortstop Hanley Ramirez and five other players to the minors on Friday, reducing the number in their major league camp to 43.
Ramirez, Boston’s top prospect, was optioned to Double-A Portland. Catcher Kelly Shoppach was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket while four players were reassigned to the minor league camp – right-handed pitchers Denney Tomori and Kris Wilson, infielder Dave Berg and infielder-outfielder Simon Pond.
Ramirez was optioned after Boston’s 5-3 win over Florida in which he doubled in the tying run and scored the final run. Berg has played for Florida and Toronto, while Pond reached the majors last year with Toronto.
Tomori spent the past 13 seasons pitching in Japan. Wilson has pitched with Kansas City but spent last year in the minors.
