An interesting hearing has been held before Justice Savage at the Supreme Court room in Auburn this week. If is to decide whether the wife or mother of the late Edwin C. Wood of Lewiston is to have $2000 of the estate left by the deceased. Mr. Wood had two insurance policies in the New York Life, of $1000 each. The policy reads to “Rosilla, my wife.” Rosilla Wood is the mother of the deceased while Alma Wood is the wife. Both claim the insurance.

The New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. offers for a limited period trial telephones in the residences of those who never before had telephone service. The company has over 165,000 stations. For particulars call the manager of the Lewiston Exchange, No. 259.

50 Years Ago, 1955

Mica miners at the T. C. Mining Co. property at Noble’s Corner, recovered, Monday, 16,000 grams of caesium ore, according to President Stanley I. Perham. Caesium is an important and rare element used in photo-electric cell construction, and is valuable for scanning apparatus, infra red signaling devices for the armed forces, and electronics. Few deposits of the size of the Norway find are known to exist.

Twenty-five years ago several tons each were produced at Newry, Buckfield and Greenwood, and made Maine one of the principal sources of supply.

25 Years Ago, 1980

If two empty liquid propane gas tank cars had turned over Thursday morning instead of just derailing, the picturesque, hilltop village of New Gloucester might have been the scene of a fiery disaster. However, only four rail cars filled with thick Bunker C. heating oil actually overturned, rolled down an embankment, and spilled oil into a pond just a half mile from Route 231 and about a mile from the village center. The liquid propane cars which were connected to the oil tank cars only derailed and remained upright.
