We need to defeat President Bush’s budget as proposed. It does not reflect the community values that we grew up with in rural Maine – caring for our neighbors, frugality and respect for the natural environment.

The Bush budget robs from the poor and middle class to reward the wealthy. To provide tax breaks for the rich, we would cut public housing, Medicaid funding, food and nutrition funding, and funding for education. Local taxes would have to increase to make up for the shortfall.

To allow for gas-guzzling automobiles, the budget promotes oil drilling in sensitive wilderness areas, even though raising mileage standards on automobiles, trucks and SUVs would not only provide us with greater future oil reserves, but would, at the same time, decrease emissions that contribute to lung disease, acid rain and global warming.

Despite slashing the budgets of programs that benefit not only the most needy, but also those of us that expect to have children in public schools or expect to grow old and need health care, this budget adds $400 billion to our national debt.

It is a budget devoid of compassion that simply passes on the financial, physical and emotional costs of today’s spending to future generations.
