Pupils from across the state, one from each of Maine’s counties, met at the Eastern Maine Community College on Saturday to test their spelling acumen.

Thomas Guthrie, a pupil at the James F. Doughty Middle School in Penobscot County, took top honors, outspelling Michelle James of the China Middle School in Kennebec County, who won the silver medal. Third place and the bronze medal went to Anna MacInnis, of the Jefferson Village School in Lincoln County.

The other participants who competed at the state level after winning their county bees were:

Shane Nichols, Minot Consolidated School in Androscoggin County; Marina DiMarco, of the Houlton Southside School, Aroostook County; Marshall Kelloway, Brunswick Junior High School, Cumberland County; Samuel Cohen, Mt. Blue Middle School, Franklin County; Meghan J. Cooper, Bucksport Middle School, Hancock County; Adrienne Horne, Appleton Village School, Knox County; Brayden Richards, Oxford Hills Middle School, Oxford County; Paige McGuinness, Penquis Valley School, Piscataquis County; Cooper Jones, Mount Ararat School, Sagadahoc County; Danielle Summers, Skowhegan Area Middle School, Somerset County; Colby Blanchard, Troy Central School, Waldo County; Susan Ames, Calais Middle School, Washington County; and Frankie Azzaratta, Massabesic Junior High School, York County.
