LEWISTON – Another day, another cramped motel room. Even so, Luis Arroyo and his family could not be happier.

Burned out of their Auburn home a week ago, Arroyo and his family expected to be booted out of their temporary home at the Chalet Motel on Monday. But the generosity of the public keeps coming and coming.

By Monday night, enough funding had come in to allow the family of four to remain at the Lisbon Street motel for several more weeks.

“The community has been very kind,” said Arroyo.

Arroyo, Luemily Melendez and their two children were burned out of their Newbury Street apartment in a fire police say was set. Since then, they have been living at the Chalet on funds provided by the American Red Cross. That money was set to run out on Monday.

Instead of finding themselves on the street, Arroyo said donated money will allow the family to stay at the motel for another two or three weeks while they look for an apartment. Meanwhile, Arroyo said at least three building owners from the area have offered the family a chance to interview for an apartment.

“Right now, we’re taking it one day at a time,” Arroyo said.

Over the next few days, the family will meet with prospective landlords and try to secure a new home. Meanwhile, the family was dealing with sharing the confines of one small motel room.

“We’re so cooped up. We take the children out to the pool or the arcade,” Arroyo said. “We want to get out bad.”

The family made arrangements with the school system to have a bus swing by the Chalet to pick up the children for school, Arroyo said. They were also picking through the gift certificates, money and toys that have poured in since information about their plight circulated in the newspaper.

“If it wasn’t for the Sun Journal getting the story out, we wouldn’t be doing so good,” Arroyo said.

In all, seven families were left homeless by the March 22 fire at Newbury and Main streets. A 35-year-old Auburn man, Kenneth Rideout Jr., has been charged with arson in the blaze. He appeared in court for the first time Monday but entered no plea.
