PHILLIPS – State fire investigators were back Monday on the scene of a fire that extensively damaged the upper level and stairway of a residential and commercial building Sunday.

Phillips Fire Chief Glendon Bachelder stayed at the 2-story wooden structure at 6 Bridge St. overnight Sunday and was still there Monday to secure the scene, state investigator Chris Stanford said Monday.

The first floor of the building owned by Sean Haley of Phillips was used as storage by a contractor, and the second floor was an apartment that was not occupied, Stanford said.

Three investigators, Tim York, Rick Shepard and Stanford, responded Sunday to review the scene and were back again Monday conducting interviews, Stanford said.

More interviews need to be conducted, he said, before a cause is determined.

Stanford said the first floor of the building was not damaged by the fire, which was reported about 1:37 p.m., but the second floor was extensively damaged by fire, as was the stairwell leading to the second floor.

Firefighters reported flames coming from the stairwell when they arrived on the scene and were able to knock it down quickly, Stanford said.
