FARMINGTON – Herbert S. Kelley, 88, of Vienna, died early Friday evening, April 1, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

He was born in Vienna, Oct. 14, 1916, a son of Edwin and Sadie Clements Kelley. He received his education in Vienna schools.

On June 24, 1939, he married Freda Mae Wing in Farmington. She died Aug. 15, 1999.

He was a lifelong resident of Vienna, and lived at his home on the Town House Road since the age of four.

He was a former member of the Vienna Board of Selectmen, as well as a former road commissioner.

His first work experience was that of a janitor in the Vienna schoolhouse. He later worked at Chadbourne’s Dowel Mill. He farmed for a period of time before starting his excavation business, building roads and installing septic systems in the area.

He was an avid snowmobiler and was known as having had the first snowmobile in the town of Vienna. His dog was a favorite travel companion on the back of the snowmobile as well. He enjoyed cutting firewood on Berry Hill with his best buddy, Gil Brown.

He is survived by a sister, Hazel Kelley, of Rumford; and several nieces and nephews.
