RUMFORD – General Electric of Auburn, and the River Valley Merchants of Rumford-Mexico captured division crowns at the annual Men’s Basketball Tournament hosted by the Mountain Valley Rec Basketball League last weekend.

A total of 12 teams were entered in the competition, 6 in both the A Division and B Division.

GE took top honors in the B Division, defeating CSM Real Estate of Kingfield-Farmington in a close title game. Other entries included Savage Excavation of Bethel-Rumford, Stone Mountain Mortgage of Bethel-Rumford, Reunited of Kennebunk, and The Club of Phillips-Strong. Jake St. Hilaire of GE was named the tourney MVP. Receiving All-Tournament honors were Daryl Whitney of Stone Mountain; Toby Lewia of Reunited; and Kyle Jones of CSM.

The A Division, with good parity, housed Raynor Plumbing of Jay, Wentworth Woodworking of Bethel, Free Spirit Transportation of Auburn, Liberty Mutual/The Winning Edge of Lewiston-Auburn, Mountain Valley Alumni of Rumford-Mexico, and River Valley Merchants of Rumford-Mexico. The Merchants edged Wentworth in an exciting double-overtime contest to claim the title. The championship was decided on an alley-oop basket with just 1 second left. Kinsey Durgin of the Merchants, a team sponsored by Franklin Savings, TJ Wheeler Excavation, and Laid-back Installers, was named the tourney MVP. All-Tourney selections were given to Shawn Spadea of Free Spirit; Patrick Dempsey of Liberty Mutual; Walter Phillips and Tyler Wentworth of Wentworth Woodworking; and Kevin Payette of the Merchants.

Although Sunday’s schedule was threatened by potential flooding, games and shooting contests were completed. The Penalty Box Restaurant served as central headquarters for the tourney and festivities on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday’s schedule included preliminaries for the shooting contests, while finals were held Sunday along with a slam dunk contest. The foul shooting finalists were Corey Guilford of The Club, Richard Krzyewsky of CMS Real Estate, Scot Bessey of Free Spirit, and Dempsey. Krzyewsky earned the title, canning 24 of 25 shots.

The 3-point finalists were Joe Gaudreau of Savage Excavation, Kevin Bean of MV Alumni, Durgin and Guilford. The long range bombing of Gaudreau earned him the crown.

The slam dunk contest featured Robie Wentworth of Wentworth Woodworking, Jared Oldham of MV Alumni, Durgin and Phillips. Oldham took top honors.

About $2,000 was raised for the American Lung Association of Maine during the weekend event.

Tourney organziers hope to add 4 teams to the A Division next year and change the format to full, stop-time contests. The B Division format will remain the same, although 4 more teams could be added. And there are hopes for a Women’s Division.
