In 1880, just 25 years ago, the B. Peck Co. started in business in Lewiston in a small store on Lisbon street. Twice they have moved since those early days, first to the Sands Building, and later to the big store they now occupy on Main street. Today they open their 25th Anniversary Sale and all departments will show their latest and best from the world’s fashion centres.

50 Years Ago, 1955

Under the weight of his 80 years, Sir Winston Churchill stepped down tonight as Britain’s Prime Minister – still flashing the champion’s V-for-Victory sign.

He this cleared the way for his political heir, Sir Anthony Eden, to become Prime Minister tomorrow and take up the fight of the nationwide election campaign just ahead.

Churchill’s resignation closed quietly a chapter in 20th Century history, in strange contrast to the strife and turmoil that marked much of his 55 years in politics. A strike had silenced London’s big newspapers.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Maple syrup production this year has been the poorest in decades, say some northern New England producers, and the reason appears to be the weather.

Many syrup producers in the region have already pulled their taps, although in previous years sap flow continued almost to the end of April.
