RUMFORD – A quick response by firefighters was credited with saving a home early Wednesday evening after a fire was spotted on its back porch.

Rumford Deputy Fire Chief Ben Byam said no one was injured in the fire, which did an estimated $300 to $400 in damage to a back deck of the 129 South Rumford Road home of Marlene Giberson.

Byam said that Giberson, who was away, was not expected to return to her home until today. The fire was spotted by someone who was looking after the house, and was reported at 6:01 p.m., he added.

Flames, he said, were showing in the back of the house when Rumford firefighters arrived, but the fire was quickly knocked down.

“There was no damage to the structure, and nothing about the fire seems suspicious. It was an undetermined cause,” Byam added.

Byam initially requested Mexico firefighters for mutual aid, but when the fire was knocked down quickly, the call was canceled. Rumford Patrolmen David Bean and Charles Beale assisted with traffic control.
