LEWISTON – Gladys E. Lyman, 88, a longtime resident of East Livermore, died Tuesday, April 5, at Central Maine Medical Center following a very brief illness.

She was born in Greene, on Nov. 19, 1916, the daughter of Theodore N. and Ethel Poole Howe. She attended schools in Leeds and was valedictorian of Monmouth Academy, Class of 1934.

On May 22, 1937, she married Royston “Stubby” O. Lyman of Stricklands at the Methodist parsonage in Winthrop. He passed away on Dec. 16, 1999. She worked at the Stricklands store and was the last postmaster of Strickland, in 1944. She was also a mail carrier for East Livermore and worked at Berry Hill Agway in Livermore packing apples for 13 years.

She was an active member of the New Norland Grange, where she served as secretary and also worked as janitor. She will be remembered for the biscuits she baked for the grange suppers over many years. She was a member of the Cheer-a-bit Club and was an honorary member of the Bowman Field Flying Club. She loved walking with her cats and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and cooking.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Llewellyn and Linda Lyman of North Livermore; two daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Clarendon (Bing) Crosby of North Jay and Lucy and David Henry of Jay; a sister, Beatrice Richards of Livermore Falls; a brother and his wife, Cecil and June Howe of Leeland, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, Kenneth Lyman, a special grandson whom she helped raise, Glen Lyman-Walton, Donald Lyman, Cinda Foster, Elizabeth Houk, Janet Lane, Janice Strout, Jennifer Morrell, Brenda Melotto, Marcia Visconti and Debra Pease; 14 great-grandchildren, Kimberly Nadeau, Shane Strout, Kristen Lane, James Foster, Shauna Strout, Alyssa Foster, Kendra Lyman, Jeffrey Walton, Hannah Melotto, Alex Morrell, Emily Melotto, Zachary Morrell, Laura Pease and Sophia Visconti; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Louise Garey; three brothers, Basil, Wallace and Willard Howe; and a great-grandson, Kendrick Lyman.
