NORWAY – The Oxford County Fair Association will hold the second annual Horseman’s Ball on Saturday.
Organizers are hoping for a bigger turnout this year than last as they continue with efforts to raise money for the harness racing track and events at the Oxford County Fair.
According to Lesley Dean, who helped come up with the ball idea, 60 or 70 people attended last year. That’s not many, she said, “but we had a hell of a good time!”
Once again, the Blue Willow Band will provide music for the ball, which will be held at the Norway Armory on Elm Street. Tickets are $50, but will be offered at a reduced rate for members of the Maine National Guard’s 133rd, 152nd and 619th battalions.
There also will be a sweepstakes for those who cannot attend the ball or don’t like dancing, Dean said. A total of 99 sweepstakes tickets will be sold for a drawing to win a $1,000 prize.
Dean said she hopes to sell at least 80 tickets to cover the ball costs. “Every dime after that goes to the fair,” she said. She noted it is difficult to draw in much money the first few times a new event is held.
The ball is intended to give people a chance to dress up a bit and get out, Dean said. Some refreshments will be provided, and people may bring their own alcoholic beverages.
