JAY – The town has received a state gateway grant to spruce up the entrance to the Chisholm end of town near Livermore Falls.
Town Manager Ruth Marden applied for the Maine Department of Transportation grant. It was approved for up to $10,000, which would include a match of in-kind work by town employees.
The money can be used for landscaping, fencing, signs, beautification and similar things, Marden said Thursday.
The Jay veterans’ memorial is near the gateway, and some of the money could be used for that project, Marden said.
A committee has raised money to improve the World War II Monument and to add other monuments to represent other wars. It has also added granite benches and landscaping. The group has been working on raising funds to install an ornamental fence around the monument.
Marden said she sent a copy of the grant to monument committee Chairwoman Hyla Friedman and asked her to meet so they could plan what needs to be done.
Residents are also being asked to raise another $10,000 this year for the monument upgrade. Jay voters raised $10,000 last year.
Marden said the money would also be used to put up a “Welcome to Jay” sign with facts about the town on it.
