LEWISTON – Bates College has received a $2,300 grant to provide full-tuition scholarships for two students from Androscoggin County high schools to participate in an intense study program on the Bates campus.

The grant from the Maine Community Foundation will pay the way for them to attend the Edmund S. Muskie Scholars Program in History, Politics and Government.

Founded in 1989 for high school students entering their senior year, the 2005 program runs from June 19 to July 1. The deadline for submission of applications is April 29.

Participants will live on the Bates College campus and engage in an intensive curriculum of lectures by faculty from Bates and other colleges.

Students gather for small-group discussions and in-class exercises on the political history of the United States since World War II.

A key feature of the program is completing research in the holdings of the Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library, especially the papers of Edmund S. Muskie, as well as the gubernatorial records of James B. Longley and related collections.
