As if it weren’t hard enough already.

The odds of winning Powerball are going to get slimmer. The 29 states that participate in the lottery game voted last week to change the odds of winning from 1 in 120.5 million to 1 in 146.1 million.

Apparently, too many people – they’ve got to be kidding, right? – were winning, keeping the jackpots at a measly $10 million. After the change, the jackpot will start out at $15 million and will grow by no less than $5 million a week.

About one-third of the people who play the lottery, according to a recent survey, say winning is the only way they’ll ever achieve financial security. Unfortunately, a study by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards estimates that nearly one-third of lottery winners end up bankrupt.

Long odds just keep getting longer for lottery players.
