Yesterday afternoon about thirty-five employees of the New England Telephone Co., engaged in laying an underground conduit for wires and cables on College street, Lewiston, struck, or quit work pending the action of the telephone company in regard to granting the employees’ demand for a 9-hour day instead of a 10-hours day.

In a recent address to an audience consisting largely of working people, Mrs. Back, wife of the director of the industrial school (Gewerbe Schule) at Frankfort, brought to the attention of her hearers the following interesting information in regard to a new article of kitchen furniture – the hay box, or fireless stove, says a writer in Consular Reports.

50 Years Ago, 1955

A zoo, populated with live animals and birds, will be featured at Peck’s 75th anniversary observances which starts today. The management has obtained raccoons, a young bear, deer, four pheasants, ducks and some owls from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Game. Robert Couture of Lewiston, trainer of rare tropical birds, will be in charge of this zoo. Some of his prize birds are there too. The zoo, comprising an area about 20 feet wide and 40 feet long, is located on the basement floor. It will continued the next two weeks.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Muhammad Ali, boxing’s self-proclaimed “greatest of all time,” said Wednesday he want to be the greatest athlete in sports history – and will come out of retirement to fight undefeated World Boxing Council heavyweight king Larry Holmes. A agreement for the $10 million fight – Ali’s first since he left the ring in September of 1978 – was announced by Ali at a news conference not far from Ali’s Los Angeles home. The bout will be held July 11 at Rio de Janeiro’s 165,000-seat Maracana Stadium.
