I read with appreciation Rep. Ray Pineau’s words in regard to lives sacrificed to war. Body count is a poor indicator of the cost of Iraq. If statistics compare with those for Vietnam, those who physically survive Iraq can expect to have higher rates of disease, unemployment, homelessness, addiction and suicide.
The History Channel has been running a program called “The Last Days of WWII.” In it, you see brave men cry over experiences they lived more than 50 years ago. For many who survived the war physically, “War is hell.” Present tense. It gets relived every day.
Rep. Mike Michaud is angry about President Bush’s cuts to the number of hospital beds at Togus. How do those cuts square with, “No man left behind?” How many more dead are needed? How many more lives destroyed for a mistake?
With the intelligence community telling us that the war is hurting America, why not withdraw from Iraq, as suggested by Colin Powell?
