Twenty-six sex offenders living in the 10 towns of the River Valley are currently required to register with their respective local police departments or the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department.

Those living in towns with local police departments must register there, said a spokesman for the state’s Sex Offender Registry.

Mexico Police Chief Jim Theriault said eight men and one woman living in his town are required to check into his office every three months for either 10 years, or for life, depending upon the severity of the crime.

Registrants must verify their address and identification and are fingerprinted, he said. If a registered sex offender does not register in a timely manner, the Maine State Police notifies the local police department, asking it to locate the offender. That person is then subject to arrest, said Theriault.

Nine people must report every three months to the Rumford Police Department; in Dixfield, one man must report to the Dixfield Police Department. The registered sex offenders living in River Valley towns without police departments must check in with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department.

The number of sex offenders in these towns now are: Peru, 2; Canton, 2; Carthage, 1; Andover, 2. None are reported to be living in Hanover, Byron or Roxbury.

Anyone who wants to learn more about registered sex offenders living in their towns may call their respective police departments or visit the Web sites: www.maine.gov or www.informe.org/sor.
