FRYEBURG – Kelli O’Connor pitched a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts to carry Poland to a 4-0 victory over Fryeburg. Becky Lindquist belted a two-run single with two outs in the fourth.

Kayla Bickford and O’Connor each had two hits for the Knights (1-0).

Gould 5, Bridgton 3

BETHEL – Matt Stone had two hits, including a two-run double to lead Gould to a 5-3 victory over Bridgton. Carl Olsen went the distance, giving up just two hits and struck out seven to pick up the win for Gould (3-2).

Poland 8, Fryeburg 6

FRYEBURG – Tyler Merchant went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Poland to a 8-6 victory over Fryeburg.

Joe Douglas and Jeremy Callahan chipped in for the Knights (1-0) with two hits apiece, while starter Will Griffith picked up the win.

Ryan Wallace and J.D. Hill had two hits each for Fryeburg.

College softball
Bates sweeps Colby

LEWISTON – Erin Foye went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead Bates to a 6-1 victory in game one a doubleheader sweep of Colby.

Katie Franklin also had two hits for Bates.

In the second game, Kristen Masino pitched a two hitter with four strikeouts in a 1-0 win. Caitlin Murphy scored the game’s only run on a wild pitch in the second.

St. Joe’s, USM split

STANDISH – The University of Southern Maine and St. Joseph’s College split a doubleheader.

The Huskies (16-12-1) took the first contest 9-1, while the Monks (11-19) rebounded to take the nightcap 3-2.

In the first game, Melissa Henderson set a new school record with 14 strikeouts.

After four scoreless innings, the Huskies plated three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, before scoring five runs on three hits in the seventh inning, including a three-run homer by pinch hitter Caterina Riitano.

In the nightcap, Leanne Morton scored on an error in the eighth inning to lift St. Joe’s.

College baseball
Bowdoin 8, UMF 1

BRUNSWICK – Pat Quinn tossed five strong innings as the Bowdoin baseball squad cruised to an 8-1 win over the University of Maine at Farmington.

Quinn allowed four hits and no earned runs to record his second victory of the season.

Jon Koperniak had three hits and two RBIs and scored twice for the Polar Bears (14-9).

Justin Quimby led the Beavers (3-12) with two hits, while Eric Cumimings posted Farmington’s lone RBI.
