NORTH CASTLE, N.Y. (AP) – Two people were killed Saturday when a small plane crashed in a wooded area near Westchester County Airport just over the Connecticut border, authorities said.

The Cessna 172 was about one-quarter of a mile from a runway at the airport just north of New York City when radar and radio communications were lost, said Holly Baker, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Both people aboard the plane were killed; their identities were not immediately released. They apparently had been practicing instrument landing approaches, Baker said.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.
