LEWISTON – Pinch runner Casey McCormack scored the winning run on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Bates a 4-3 victory over Colby on Saturday.
After Colby tied the game in the seventh, Erik Hood scooted to second on an error and was replaced by McCormack. A walk and a sacrifice moved the runners into scoring position. Pitcher Tyler Hales then threw the ball to the backstop on a 3-1 pitch to score the game-winner.
Mike Kinsman of Bates (7-10) allowed one earned run to improve his record to 4-1.
Bowdoin 2, Williams 0
BRUNSWICK – Ricky Leclerc fired a no-hitter to lead Bowdoin to a 2-0 victory over Williams.
Leclerc struck out 10 and walked four in the six-inning gem. Jon Koperniak had a single and a double to lead the offense.
Softball
Albany sweeps Maine
ORONO – Albany rallied for two runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap to sweep a softball doubleheader from Maine, 7-0 and 3-1.
Albany pitcher Amanda Morin limited Maine (12-20) to one hit in the opener. Molly McKinney knocked in Maine’s only run in the nightcap. Kelly Ogden tied the game for Albany (25-9) with a solo shot in the fourth.
Elms 2, Thomas 1
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior pitcher Kristi Guzzo threw a complete-game, two-hitter and freshman second baseman Karyn Palomba scored the game-winning run to lift the Blazers to a 2-1 five-inning win over Thomas College in Saturday’s rain-shortened non-conference softball game at Dooley Field.
Men’s lacrosse
Amherst 10, Bowdoin 9
AMHERST, Mass. – Bowdoin’s stormed back from a six-goal deficit, but 11th-raked Amherst held on for a 10-9 victory.
Amherst (8-3) led 7-3 at halftime and 9-3 after a pair of goals 20 seconds apart. The Polar Bears (8-4) responded by scoring the next five goals – three by Andy Nelson – before Andrew Syfu scored the game-winner with 12:32 remaining.
Thomas 12, Johnson State 5
WATERVILLE – Mike Ross scored four goals and teammates Chris Vachon and Thomas Jerald each punched in a pair as Thomas College waltzed off with a 12-5 victory over Johnson State in men’s lacrosse on Saturday.
Terriers goalie Jon Robertson’s 15 saves shut down the Johnson attack.
Connecticut 9, Colby 4
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior midfielder Dave Schwartz exploded with four goals, leading Connecticut College (7-5, 5-2) to a 9-4 victory over Colby College (2-9, 0-7) in men’s lacrosse on soggy Freeman Field Saturday afternoon.
Junior Joe Higgins tallied three goals for the Camels, who won their fifth straight victory and fourth consecutive NESCAC contest.
Women’s lacrosse
Bowdoin 11, Wesleyan 9
BRUNSWICK – Taylor White scored four goals to spark Bowdoin to a 11-9 women’s lacrosse victory over Wesleyan.
Bowdoin built a 5-1 lead by halftime. Kendall Cox recorded six saves for the win.
Colby 9, Trinity 5
WATERVILLE – Colby College goaltender Catharine O’Brien stopped 20 shots and Emma Miller had three goals to power the eighth-ranked Colby College women’s lacrosse team to a 9-5 victory over 15th-ranked Trinity College on Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.
Colby improves to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Trinity falls to 8-5 and 2-5 in league play.
UNE 9, Colby-Sawyer 7
NEW LONDON, N.H. – The University of New England scored three goals in a span of less than two minutes to send the Nor’Easters to a 9-7 win over Colby-Sawyer in women’s lacrosse on Saturday afternoon.
Playing in cold, rainy conditions, the two teams battled for the full 60 minutes, with UNE coming away with a share of the Commonwealth Coast Conference title at 6-2 in league play.
Boys’ lacrosse
Hebron 13, Kents Hill 2
KENTS HILL – Chris Hamilton scored four goals and teammates Charlie Pens and Roman Gosney dropped in a pair each as Hebron Academy (3-3) rolled to a 13-2 victory over Kents Hill in boys’ lacrosse action on Saturday.
Rick Smith scored both goals for Kents Hill (0-3).
Girls’ lacrosse
Hebron 9, Kents Hill 8
KENTS HILL – Maddy Campbell and Taylor Fey each punched in three goals as Hebron Academy (3-1) shook off Kents Hills (0-3) with a 9-8 victory in girls’ lacrosse action on Saturday.
