NEW YORK (AP) – “Lennon,” the new musical celebrating the life and songs of John Lennon, has canceled its Boston tryout to retool for the show’s Broadway opening, still scheduled for July 28.
“We made the decision today to forgo our Boston engagement and will instead return to the rehearsal room in New York with our cast and creative team to make the changes that will be beneficial to our show,” producer Allan McKeown said Monday. The musical was to have played Boston May 31-June 25.
“Lennon” currently is running through May 14 in San Francisco where the show opened at the Curran Theatre to what were mixed to downbeat reviews.
The San Francisco Chronicle, while calling the show “brightly creative, engagingly earnest, irreverent, sweet, informative and funny,” said the musical “never fulfills the rich promise that hovers so tantalizingly just beyond its reach.”
The Variety out-of-town notice was more discouraging. “Only one actor, Will Chase, appears to embody the man – the others don’t come close, even in spirit, and their generic portrayals, compounded with a heartless story, prevent “Lennon’ from shooting “all you need is love’ arrows into auds’ hearts,” the review said.
In “Lennon,” a group of performers, including Chase, Terrence Mann, Julia Murney and Mandy Gonzalez, play the former Beatle at various times in his life.
The musical, written and directed by Don Scardino, begins preview performances in New York on June 28, with the opening set at the Broadhurst Theatre for one month later.
