SCARBOROUGH – Walter E. Major, 85, formerly of Belfast, passed away Saturday, April 23, at the Maine Veterans Home, Scarborough, where he was well cared for and lived for the past two years.
He was born in Lowell, Mass., June 1, 1919, to Harry and Lillian Major, who emigrated from Canada.
He served in the Navy in World War II, European Africa and the Philippines with the rank of petty officer first class. He also served as chief commissary aboard the DE 707 in the South Pacific.
He married Hazel Pelkey on Aug. 19, 1950, and she passed away Oct. 11, 1982. He worked at the Aviation Corp., doing government work, then in many mills and factories. He was a sweet and gentle man who loved fishing, the Red Sox, Seadogs and Patriots, as well as the many flowers he planted and nurtured.
He is survived by three stepdaughters, Mrs. John (Rowena) Emerson of Murray, Ky., Mrs. John (Phyllis) Gilbride of Sabattus and The Villages, Fla., and Mrs. Anthony (Irene) Trimarchi of Tampa, Fla.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and people he considered to be his family.
Although we will miss him, we know he is in a better place and will be welcomed by others he loved who have passed before him.
