OXFORD – Voters approved the discontinuance of Lars Drive during a special town meeting last night.

The discontinuance was needed for the proposed Home Depot slated for property on Route 26, where a drive-in theater had been. Property developer Richard Traft said the Planning Board has approved the design with conditions.

He noted that an application has been submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection, and the permit is expected in the next few weeks.

“We look forward to breaking ground in June,” Traft said after voters’ approval. He also thanked the community.

Voters also accepted $1,500 received from a Police Department drug case.

During a selectmen’s meeting after the special town meeting, Selectman Dennis Sanborn presented Town Manager Michael Chammings with a T-shirt marking the 250-year anniversary of Oxford County. Sanborn noted that the shirts are available at Hot Colors in Norway.

Selectman Dave Ivey asked PACE Ambulance representatives to meet with the board during its next meeting. Board members discussed meeting with other ambulance services in upcoming meetings also.

Ivey asked Chammings to look into how the community could change the fire chief’s job from an elected position to an appointed one. He said he was upset Fire Chief Fred Knightly did not attend the Fire Department budget hearing.

The board appointed Dennis Heino to the Planning Board. It is looking for volunteers for several committees, including the Planning Board and the cemetery committee, and asked anyone interested to contact the town office.
