Just now automobile circles are being stirred up as to the relative merits of the Buick and the Rambler touring cars.

A contest in hill climbing was held Wednesday morning at Goff Hill when a Buick owned by V. S. Darling and a Rambler of J. W. Skene’s were up against each other for a purse of not hundreds, but rather $10 it is understood. The contest was very evenly matched but the Rambler machine won by a slight margin.

50 Years Ago, 1955

The Army today issued a draft call for 10,000 men in June.

The quota is the same as that previously announced for May.

The April call was for 8,000 men – the lowest of any month since the draft resumed shortly after the outbreak of war in Korea.

The June call brings to 1,809,430 the number of men drafted or earmarked for induction since the resumption of Selective Service.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Rumford – Pride in a native son is often taken for granted, but once again this Northern Oxford County community is bubbling over with pride for its most famous son, U.S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie.

President Jimmy Carter nominated Muskie Tuesday to become the next secretary of state and the announcement caused quite a stir and jubilant excitement for this Western Maine community.
