GORHAM – Max Arsenault hit an infield single in the top of the ninth that scored Joe McGhee for the game-winning run as the University of Southern Maine defeated St. Joe’s 10-8 in baseball action on Thursday.
Eddie Skeffington belted a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs for the Huskies (19-9).
The Monks tied the game in the eighth when Andy Cieslak drove in Derek McIntosh from third. Andy Exley had two hits and drove in two runs for the Monks (23-9). Josh Armandi picked up the win for USM to improve to (4-1).
Softball
Maine swept
BOSTON – The University of Maine softball team was was swept away in a doubleheader on Thursday, losing 5-2 and 11-5 to Boston University.
In the first game, Maine’s scoring came on a double by Brittany Cheney in the third inning. Cheney drove in Jess Brady and Dana Grimm. Sarah Bennis struck out two while taking the loss.
In the second game, Alexis Pullen started and was relieved in the second inning by Jenna Merchant, who went four innings for the Black Bears (13-22) with three strikeouts. Candace Jaegge stepped into the game in the sixth inning. Kristie Hawkins and Molly McKinney both contributed RBI singles.
UNE splits
BEVERLY, Mass. – Sarah Hamel pitched a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and only two walks to lead the University of New England to 5-0 victory over Anna Maria in a softball matchup.
UNE’s (15-9) Michelle Clark belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach.
In Game 2, Endicott’s Elyse Colby smacked an RBI double in the first for the game’s only run as Endicott defeated UNE, 1-0. Robyn Savitzke went the distance, giving up just three hits and struck out four batters to pick up the win. Hamel was the tough luck loser in this game, allowing only three hits while striking out five.
