As a Maine citizen, I am heartened by Gov. Baldacci’s foresight in using solar electric systems to light his office. The office has also been converted to energy-efficient lighting so that 75 percent less electricity is used.

I support the governor’s new Office of Energy Independence and Security to promote energy initiatives such as biodiesel and weatherization, doubling the number of hybrid vehicles and reducing state travel. The state now purchases 40 percent of its electricity from renewable power that produces no greenhouse gas emissions.

I also support the governor for his executive order incorporating energy-efficient building standards for all new and renovated state buildings.

I support the governor’s bond package, which includes $50 million to replenish the Land for Maine’s Future program. The 1999 bond package brought matching funds at a rate of almost $2.50 for every LMF dollar spent to protect Maine’s treasured lands for recreation and harvest.

I think Maine will remain “the way life should be,” as long as we have Gov. Baldacci’s positive direction for solving environment problems.
