I was sorely disappointed at the action of the SAD 58 School Board when it voted to cut the position of the counselor at the Phillips Elementary School earlier this month. One of the many dreams cited at the inception of the public school system was an equalization of the classes; eliminating the counselor’s position works beautifully to undermine that dream.

How will children from needy families receive the help they would only find at school? Help that would teach them how to negotiate their way through a world that is already challenging them? How will they gain the advantages that would lead them to college or a technical program? The sooner a child gets help, the more is the chance of success. We live perenially in a budget crisis; surely the board could have found another way.
