GILFORD, N.H. (AP) – School officials are working hard to help children understand the recent arrest of one of their teachers on sexual assault charges.

William Crowley, 35, a fourth grade teacher at Gilford Elementary School, is charged with sexually assaulting a ten-year-old boy he was baby-sitting in December.

Superintendent Paul DeMinico said since Crowley’s arrest last week, school officials have sent letters to parents, put together a team of councilors to answer questions from children and held informational sessions for the public.

The school district also sent an open letter to the community explaining that it did an extensive check of Crowley’s background before hiring him two years ago and found nothing that indicated any kind of problem.

Crowley is due in court for a probable cause hearing May 3.
