BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin scored on itself six seconds into overtime to hand Bates a 6-5 victory in the opening round of the NESCAC men’s lacrosse tournament.
Peter Friedman had tied the game at 4-4 before Wes Couture gave the Bobcats a short-lived 5-4 advantage. Paul Kazarian recorded 16 saves for Bates.
The stunning victory sends the Bobcats (9-5) into the semifinals.
Baseball
St. Joe’s sweeps UMF
STANDISH – St. Joseph’s limited Maine-Farmington to seven hits and two runs to sweep a doubleheader from the Beavers, 7-2 and 12-1.
The Monks (28-9) made quick work in the opener, scoring all seven runs in the first three innings. Derek McIntosh and Charlie Furbush belted home runs in the night cap for St. Joes.
Miles Johnson and Steve Lambert picked up the wins.
USM, Keene St. splits
KEENE, N.H. – Josh Armandi scattered seven hits to help Southern Maine earn a split of a doubleheader with Keene State. After the 8-4 triumph in the opener, the hosts scored the game winner on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth for a 7-6 win.
Armandi (4-1), who did not strike out a batter, kept the Owls (20-12) off stride for his second complete game of the season. Brandon Brewer and Ryan Bourque belted two-run homers for the Huskies (21-11).
Andrew Portwine’s solo shot gave USM a 6-5 lead in the eighth of the nightcap, but the Owls tied it in the eighth and won it with a walk in the ninth on Brewer’s walks.
Softball
Trinity sweeps Bates
LEWISTON – Paige Plumer and Beth Gostania had five hits each to lead Trinity to an 8-4, 10-3 sweep of Bates.
Caitlyn Murphy ripped a home run in both games for Bates (9-9) and Carolyn King added a solo homer in the opener.
USM sweeps E. Conn.
WILLAMANTIC, Conn. – Katie Mainville tossed a no-hitter to lead Southern Maine to a 4-1, 2-0 sweep over Eastern Connecticut.
Mainville struck out 13 and allowed two balls to leave the infield. The hosts’ lone baserunner came on a hit-batsman.
