BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind victory over the University of Southern Maine in a baseblla game on Thursday.
With the contest tied at 2-2, the Huskies (22-12) took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth, as Brent Lemieux hit a two-run single with one out, and Joe Ganley added a two-out RBI single. Babson answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth that made it 5-3, but Joe McGhee led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer to left to push the Huskies lead back to three.
Rich McGraw singled home Brandon Brewer in his team’s final at-bat to give the Huskies a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Babson began its rally with three straight hits, as Billy lucas, Matt Delaney and Ted Dziuba each recored singles off USM reliever Pat Foley. A passed ball allowed Lucas to score, and Robbie Leer followed with a scarifice fly to right that plated Delaney to make it 7-5.
After Foley got the second out, Auburn native Jay Verrill recorded his third hit of the game to put runners at the corners. Former Monmouth Academy star Tip Fairchild came in to replace Foley and loaded the bases with a walk to Matt Chatterton.
Steve Tahmoush beat out an infield hit, plating Dziuba with the Beavers’ (17-17) sixth run.
Billy Schmitt then won the game for Babson, lining a single into the left-center gap that scored Verrill and Chatterton to clinch the 8-7 victory.
Softball
USM 1, Eastern Connecticut 0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Melissa Henderson fanned 10 batters over seven innings and gave up just two hits and a walk to lead the fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine to a 1-0 triumph over Eastern Connecticut in the first game of the Little East Conference Championship.
Henderson picked up her 17th win of the season, tying her own school record for wins in a season set in 2004.
After giving up a double in each of the first two innings, Henderson held the Warriors (12-25) hitless over the next five innings as the Huskies (23-17-1) held on for the 1-0 win.
Rhode Island 2, USM 1
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Krystal Bilek cranked a one-out run-scoring double to left field to lift Rhode Island College to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in the third game of the Little East Conference Championship on Thursday.
With the score knotted up at 1-1 through five innings, Bilek put the Anchorwomen on top 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, belting Rhode Island’s third double of the game. Heidi Eichler scattered four hits, fanned seven and walked none over seven innings to post the win.
Katie Mainville picked up the loss for the Huskies (23-18-1), giving up two earned runs in just over five innings of work.
UMF 3, Thomas 1
WATERVILLE – Steph Moriarty threw a two-hitter as the University of Maine at Farmington handed Thomas College a 3-1 setback in NAC tournament softball action.
Tied at 1-all into the sixth inning, the Beavers (19-13, 9-5) pushed across a pair of runs to give Moriarity all the support she would need. The win sends UMF to the NAC finals against Elms College this weekend.
Joy Ireland suffered the loss for the Terriers.
