POWNAL, Vt. (AP) – Verizon Wireless wants to put a new cupola on a barn that would house six antennas, improving and expanding cellular phone service in town.

The company is seeking a state Act 250 land-use permit, as well as approval from the town Development Review Board, for the project. The cupola would increase the barn’s height from 28 to 35 feet.

The six antennae, each 48 inches tall and 6 inches wide, would be connected underground to an equipment shelter that would house a diesel-fueled emergency generator.

Thomas Nolan, a representative for Verizon who scouts real estate, the site on Montgomery Road has been in existence for several years and already houses antennas for Sprint.

Nolan spoke with the Pownal Select Board on March 24 about Verizon’s interest in expanding coverage within the town and along Route 7. Since meeting with the board, he has been soliciting the names of property owners interested in having antennae on their property.

“I’ve visited with a bunch of residents who were interested. At this point it’s really up to our Radio Frequency department to decide what sites will provide the best coverage for the area,” he said.

Town officials have encouraged Verizon to try to expand its coverage in Pownal.
