COOPER (AP) – A weekend boating accident on Cathance Lake left one man dead and his companion missing, authorities said Sunday.

Family members and friends reported the two men overdue after 8 p.m. Saturday, prompting a search that ended at 3 a.m. Sunday.

When searchers returned after daybreak, they found one body along the shore, the Maine Warden Service said.

That victim was identified as Tom Hiland, 57, of Princeton.

Hiland was not wearing a life jacket, according to Lt. Pat Dorian, who said a life jacket and two seat cushions were found nearby.

The other man, whose name was not released, is missing and presumed drowned, Dorian said.

Divers arrived Sunday and began searching the area of the lake near the spot where Hiland’s body was found and the debris came ashore.

A strong wind was reported on the lake Saturday, prompting many fishermen to head to shore because of the rough waters, Dorian said.
