RUMFORD – The Planning Board on Wednesday approved construction of a 150-foot telecommunications tower that should improve local cell phone reception.

Code Enforcement Officer Andy Russell said U.S. Cellular of South Berwick received a building permit Friday to construct the tower on a 100-by-100-foot leased lot owned by Pam and Marty Morgan. He said some work must be done to upgrade the access road to the tower site.

Russell said the property is off South Rumford Road. The new tower, expected to be up and functioning within a few months, will be the second one in town; the other is on Black Mountain.
