OXFORD – Oxford Aviation was recently awarded a contract by a New Hampshire company to paint four FedEx cargo planes. And prospects are good that it will be getting even more business from that company in the future.

The no-bid contract was awarded two months ago by Wiggins Airways of Manchester, N.H.

It marks the first time that Oxford Aviation, which paints and refurbishes private and commercial airplanes, has done work on airplanes owned by a company as large as FedEx.

Oxford Aviation’s president, Jim Horowitz, said the chance to do maintenance work on the FedEx planes was an economic steppingstone.

“This is a great opportunity to grow into some of the bigger planes,” he said.

Wiggins Airways has a contract with FedEx for the management of 32 of its airplanes. The four FedEx planes that Wiggins subcontracted out to Oxford Airways have single engines.

In addition to working on the FedEx planes, the contract also has Oxford Aviation painting two larger, twin-engine planes owned by Wiggins.

Oxford Aviation has already finished painting two of the FedEx planes; the second one was flown back to Manchester on Thursday. Wiggins’ vice president of business development, Steve Lord, said he was very pleased with the job Oxford has done so far. In fact, he said, Wiggins would likely contract exclusively with Oxford in the future.

“They do good detail-oriented work,” Lord said.

Horowitz was Oxford Aviation’s only employee when he founded the company in 1987, behind the Oxford Plains Speedway off Number Six Road in town. It currently has 55 employees.
