ORONO — The University of Maine softball team split a doubleheader with Stony Brook on Monday, taking the first game 2-0 and dropping the second game 6-3.

With the split, Maine, at 16-24 overall and 10-8 in the America East, is the third seed in the America East Tournament, which begins on Thursday.

In the first game, the teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Jess Brady reached first on an error, then she stole second for her 20th stolen base of the season. Amy Kuhl reached first after striking out on a wild pitch and Brady advanced to third. Lindsay Tibbetts hit a single which drove in Brady. Molly McKinney also hit a single, which drove in Tara Vilardo who was pinch running for Kuhl. Maine held on to win the game 2-0.

In the second game. Stony Brook (20-34, 10-10) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Laura Bradford hit a single to score Ashley Westphal. The Seawolves added to their lead with a grand slam by Hayley Durham in the fifth inning which scored Laura Bradford, Jane Stein and Kristen Burst. Durham’s four run shot put Stony Brook on top for the rest of the game as a seventh inning rally by Maine fell short and the Black Bears lost 6-3.
