Camp celebrates

WINTHROP – The YMCA Camp of Maine, East Winthrop, will celebrate 90 years of camping this year. Since 1915 the residential summer camp has been serving boys and girls, ages 8 to 15.

Campers select from program offerings such as aquatics, sports, arts and crafts and camping.

They can enroll for one to eight weeks. The Y camp also offers several older teen programs in leadership and out-of-camp trips.

It also offers a day camp experience for up to nine weeks, beginning June 20, for families close enough to attend. Before- and after-care is available for families of working parents.

The camp will host two open houses to give prospective families the opportunity to see it first hand and talk with the director and staff. The open house dates are from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, and Sunday, June 5.

Park gets award

PORTLAND – The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray was presented the Maine Tourism Award for Attractions during a ceremony at the annual Governor’s Conference on Tourism held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay.

The awards, sponsored by the Maine Office of Tourism and the Maine Tourism Commission, are presented to those who lead by example. Nominated by their peers in the tourism industry, the individuals and businesses were selected in a juried process.

Jack Cashman, commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, presented park Superintendent Henry Hamilton with a slate rendering of the state of Maine, handcrafted in Maine from Monson slate.

The park, operated by the Maine Department on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, cares for injured and orphaned animals that cannot be returned to the wild.
