KINGFIELD – Kingfield’s Friends and Family Ties Relay for Life team will hold its annual 1950s-style Car Hop Fundraiser and classic car rally from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the Woodsman Restaurant.

Relay for Life is a national program that raises money for the American Cancer Society for cancer research. Friends and Family Ties has been raising money for Relay for Life since the mid-1990s and, according to member Dice Dunham, “raised over $10,000 in one year, just from our base in Kingfield.”

Friends and Family Ties has been holding an annual car hop fund-raiser for a number of years, and, according to First Selectman John Dill, the event is beloved by many residents and “is just fun and it raises money for a good cause.”

Friday’s event at the Main Street restaurant will offer burgers, hot dogs, chili-dogs, french fries, frappes and floats. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Friends and Family Ties will also raffle 25 items, including a massage, a dinner for two at the Herbert Hotel, a porch rocking chair, a savings bond and gift certificates.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring their classic cars, as ribbons and trophies will be awarded at the end of the evening to winners of the Classic Car Rally. The biggest prize of the evening, however, will go to the winner of the 50/50, who will receive 50 percent of the proceeds from the evening.

Diane Christen, who owns the Woodsman and is a member of Friends and Family Ties, offers the restaurant and provides staff and cooking facilities to prepare the food, most of which comes from donations. “We solicit as much food as we can from area businesses,” she said.

Some 1950s-style refreshments will be served in a 50s atmosphere. Members of Kingfield’s youth group will take orders from attendees waiting in their cars, with old-time rock n’ roll playing in the background.
