CLEVELAND – Ben Broussard and Travis Hafner each hit two-run homers and the Cleveland Indians took out some of their offensive frustration on Los Angeles rookie Ervin Santana, roughing up the Angels 13-5 on Tuesday night.

The Indians entered with the majors’ lowest batting average at .233, but teed off early on Santana, who made his big league debut after being recalled from Double-A Arkansas.

Cleveland had three runs after just four batters and the Indians poured it on, posting season highs in runs and hits (19).

Even struggling Aaron Boone, batting just .147 before going 2-for-4, had two RBIs. The Indians chased Santana after four innings and improved to 9-0 when scoring six runs or more.

With Tampa Bay ahead 3-2, Danys Baez blew a save for the third time in six chances. Carlos Pena walked leading off the ninth and advanced on a sacrifice. Brandon Inge walked with two outs, and Rodriguez blooped a single down the left-field line.

White Sox 5, Rangers 2

CHICAGO – Jon Garland became the first eight-game winner in the major leagues, and A.J. Pierzynski homered for the third straight game to lead the Chicago White Sox over the Texas Rangers 5-2 Tuesday night.

Garland (8-0), the first White Sox pitcher to win his first eight starts since John Whitehead in 1935, gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking two. Relying on his sinker, he got Texas to hit into a pair of double plays.

Dustin Hermanson walked two in the ninth but remained perfect in nine save chances. He hasn’t given up a run in 19 1-3 innings this year.

Brewers 8, Nationals 2

WASHINGTON – Wes Obermueller took a perfect game into the seventh inning and limited Washington to two hits in eight innings, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-2 victory over the Nationals on Tuesday night.

Though not overpowering, Obermueller (1-0) retired the first 19 batters he faced before Jamey Carroll’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. Obermueller struck out four and walked none in his first victory since last September.

Brady Clark homered on the first pitch of the game, and finished with 4-for-5 to help the Brewers end a three-game losing streak. Carlos Lee added a three-run shot in the second, chasing Nationals starter Claudio Vargas (0-1).

Phillies 7, Cardinals 5

PHILADELPHIA – Bobby Abreu continued his torrid stretch, hitting his eighth homer in nine games and helping the Philadelphia Phillies overcome five errors in a 7-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Abreu’s solo homer in the first inning was his 10th in May and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Abreu drove in two runs and has RBIs in nine straight games.

Cory Lidle (3-3) allowed one earned run and struck out four in six innings. Ryan Madson pitched two scoreless innings in relief, and Billy Wagner finished for his 10th save in 11 chances, despite giving up David Eckstein’s first homer of the season.

Cubs 4, Pirates 3

PITTSBURGH – Derrek Lee’s second homer, a go-ahead two-run shot in the ninth inning, cost Jose Mesa his first blown save of the season and rallied the Chicago Cubs past the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 Tuesday night.

The Pirates led 3-1 on solo homers by Jason Bay and Rob Mackowiak in the sixth before Lee chased Pittsburgh starter Josh Fogg with a solo drive in the seventh. Lee went 4-for-4 and drove in all four runs with his 11th career multihomer game.

Mesa (0-2) was a major league-best 13-for-13 in save opportunities before Jerry Hairston doubled to start the ninth and scored on Lee’s drive into the left-center seats, Lee’s 12th of the season.

Mets 2, Reds 1

NEW YORK – Kaz Matsui turned New York fans’ boos to cheers Tuesday night with a two-run homer in the seventh inning that gave the Mets a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Matsui connected for his third homer of the season after Cincinnati starter Ramon Ortiz (1-2) handcuffed the Mets through six innings.

Doug Mientkiewicz singled with one out in the seventh and after David Wright flied out, Matsui hit Ortiz’s 1-1 pitch an estimated 385 feet over the right-field wall to turn the game.

Astros 3, D-backs 0

HOUSTON – Roy Oswalt pitched eight strong innings to stay unbeaten against Arizona, and pinch-hitter Jose Vizcaino’s two-run single with the bases loaded in the eighth sent the Houston Astros to a 3-0 win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

Oswalt (5-4) allowed only five hits – all singles – struck out eight and walked one to improve to 4-0 in four career starts against Arizona.

Blue Jays 10, Twins 3

MINNEAPOLIS – Josh Towers won his fourth straight start, and the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of Johan Santana’s worst outing in nearly a year to beat the Minnesota Twins 10-3 Tuesday night.

Towers (5-1) has allowed two earned runs or less in six of his eight starts this year. He gave up seven hits, one walk and struck out two in five innings, throwing 84 pitches.

Vernon Wells, trying to rediscover his 2003 form at the plate, when he had the most hits in the majors and 33 home runs, smacked a two-run homer off Santana in the first.

That set the tone for the reigning AL Cy Young winner’s uncharacteristically rough night.

Orioles 12, Royals 8

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Rafael Palmeiro had four hits, including his 555th home run, and drove in five runs, helping the Baltimore Orioles rally from a six-run deficit to beat the Kansas City Royals 12-8 on Tuesday night.

Brian Roberts added his 11th home run and Sal Fasano had a pinch-hit shot for the Orioles (25-13), who moved 12 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 1997 season.

Palmeiro had his first four-hit game since Sept. 28, 2001. His homer leading off the Orioles’ six-run fourth was his 41st against the Royals, the most by any player.

Rockies 9, Giants 4

DENVER – Dustan Mohr tripled and homered and newly acquired Blaine Neal anchored a strong outing by the Colorado bullpen Tuesday night to lift the Rockies to a 9-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Mohr homered immediately after Matt Holliday’s solo shot off Noah Lowry (1-5) in the second for Colorado’s first back-to-back home runs of the season.

An inning later, Todd Greene put the Rockies ahead 5-0 with a two-run shot that was part of an nine-hit, six-RBI night for the Nos. 5-9 hitters in Colorado’s lineup.

Joe Kennedy (2-4) walked three batters during San Francisco’s four-run fourth inning that made the score 6-4. But Kennedy finished the inning and pitched the fifth, then turned it over to Colorado’s maligned bullpen, which held the Giants scoreless the rest of the way. Neal, who opened the season with the Red Sox and was picked up off waivers last week, pitched the ninth inning to finish off one of the best efforts for the Rockies relievers so far.
