WILTON – Police are investigating criminal mischief complaints after at least four buildings were spray-painted with the initials “USG” sometime after dark and before midnight Wednesday.

Police believe it was one or more young individuals “trying to put their mark on society by defacing” property, Chief Wayne Gallant said Thursday.

Buildings “tagged” with the initials were Food City and the Wilton Post Office on Main Street, and businesses and buildings on High Street, Gallant said.

The chief estimated it would cost more than $400 to clean or paint over the graffiti.

Someone is trying to establish an identity with the markings, Gallant said. He believes whoever is responsible knows that gangs mark their turf that way, he said.

“We are taking it very serious,” Gallant said.
