AUBURN – Janet McLean Armstrong, 84, a resident of Schooner Estates, Auburn, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 22.

She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., May 12, 1921, to the Rev. John H. and Ida McLean. Her early years were spent in New Haven, Conn., and Cambridge, Mass. She graduated from Bates College in 1941 and went on to Simmons School of Social Work in Boston, graduating in 1943.

She met her husband, Russell “Bud” Armstrong, at Bates College. They were married in September 1943 and experienced many adventures during their 30 years in the U.S. Army. Afterwards, they retired to Wolfeboro, N.H.

She had a deep personal pride in her contributions as an Army wife from World War II through the Cold War. It was her patriotic contribution intertwined with her love of Russell that she felt deeply.

She is survived by her children, Charles (Andrea Eusden) Armstrong of Auburn, Capt. Douglas (Gerrie) Armstrong of Susan, Va., and Becky (Ken) Havekost of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren, Sam and Ben Armstrong, Margaret Armstrong and Elizabeth Puett, and Tucker and Josh Havekost; her two great-grandchildren, Blake Armstrong and Ansley Porter; and a niece, Loring Bradlee of Topsfield, Mass.

She was predeceased by her husband, Col. Russell B. Armstrong in 1988; and her sister, Flora McLean.
