CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A fire will be set this week to restore habitat for an endangered butterfly.

State officials say the fire will help restore the grassy plains the Karner Blue butterfly needs for survival. The prescribed burn takes place on federally protected land near the Concord airport.

The fire is planned for this week but depends on the weather.

The Karner blue is a sapphire-colored butterfly with a wingspan barely an inch across. The young rely on wild lupine as their only food source, and pine barrens are the only place where wild lupine grows.

Many people and organizations have been working to bring the species back and to restore its pine barrens habitat, the only place where the butterfly can survive.
