PERU – John Raymond Webster, 78, of Peru, died Monday evening, May 23, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.

He was born, April 10, 1927, in Canton, the son of Millard and Gertrude Irene (Hodge) Webster. He attended local schools, graduating from Dixfield High School in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves following high school and was discharged in 1946.

On Oct. 2, 1946, he married Irene Benedix at St. Athanasius church in Rumford. He worked as an instrument technician in the Meter Department at Oxford Paper Co., retiring at 49.

Not one to be idle and with his passion for cars, he opened Webster’s Auto Sales, which ran next to his home in Peru until September 2004 due to illness.

No matter what was happening in the world around him, he put family above all else in his life, enjoying every minute he was able to spend with them.

He is survived by his wife, Irene, of 58 years of Peru; two daughters, Joyce Richard and her husband, Donald, of New Sharon, and Beverly Garneau and her husband, David, of Lisbon Falls; three grandchildren, Donald Richard and his companion, Karrie Harriman, of New Gloucester, Melissa Letarte and her husband, Steve, of New Sharon, and Aaron Garneau and his wife, Kimberly, of Durham; six great-grandchildren, Michael, Steve and Megan Letarte of New Sharon, Devin Garneau of Durham, and Gabriella and Jonah Richard of New Gloucester.

He was predeceased by his parents.
